Similarly, Twitch has zero tolerance for acts of violence, including that done to one’s self. While the TOS may not be perfect, it does help to weed out those that actively partake in spreading negativity. Let’s be honest, no one enjoys being attacked for any reason. Twitch’s implementation of banned phrases within their TOS is to not only protect streamers from directed hate speech and, generally speaking, a negative experience while using their platform, but it also protects viewers from encountering the same experience while watching. There are other areas to be concerned about, as you may not be the one to breach the TOS, but your channel could be in hot water if your friends do while you’re streaming. I’ve added a whole bunch of these over the last few months, which you can grab below. As a result, streamers have to take action themselves to manually add these blocked terms to their profile. These words can also include slang such as incel, simp, and terms like virgin, alongside other violent speech targetted towards gender identity, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs.ĭespite being banned as part of Twitch’s terms of service (TOS), many words that fall within these categories aren’t innately banned on the platform. Twitch bans derogatory, discriminatory, racist, homophobic and other offensive terms as part of their terms of service. I’ve added a long list of banned words to my channel throughout streaming, and doing so has made life easier for my mods, myself and helped keep my community a wholesome place.
Banned words can seem like a limitation on freedom of speech, but any Twitch streamer will tell you that having them can be a saving grace from harassment, toxicity and otherwise needless abuse from users.
